People are often said to act like animals, and animals seem to act better than people. Yet humans are animals, although we often like to forget that. In this ongoing series, I create a modern bestiary, a collection of animal people. Using lush colors and texture, these portraits explore zoomorphism as a pictorial device. Drawing on influences as wide as Julie Heffernan, Kehinde Wiley, Frida Kahlo, classic nursery rhymes, fairy tales and contemporary pop culture, these acrylic paintings have a subtle narrative thread that is open to interpretation.
